1. What is Plastic EPR?

Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) is a regulatory framework introduced by the Government of India under the Plastic Waste Management Rules, 2016 (and subsequent amendments). Battery EPR is a regulatory framework under the Battery Waste Management Rules, 2022, issued by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC). It mandates that producers, importers, and brand owners (PIBOs) of batteries whether used in vehicles, electronics, or other equipment are responsible for the collection, recycling, and environmentally sound disposal of used batteries once they reach their end of life.
In simple terms, Battery EPR ensures that companies take responsibility for managing waste batteries generated from their products, preventing harmful materials like lead, cadmium, and lithium from contaminating the environment.

It requires producers, importers, and brand owners (PIBOs), as well as Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), to take responsibility for the collection, recycling, and safe disposal of end-of-life electrical and electronic equipment (EEE).
